Study English at City College Oxford

At City College Oxford we offer classes at different levels; from Beginner to Proficiency. These English courses are aligned to the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR) as below:

Beginner / CEFR Level A0-A1: (IELTS 0 to 2.5)

This level is for students who have very little or no English and may just know the English alphabet. This provides a grounding in basic English language for anyone visiting English-speaking countries.

Elementary / CEFR Level A1-A2: (IELTS 2.5 to 3.5)

This level is for students who have studied at beginner level and want to improve comprehension, speaking and grammar.

Pre-Intermediate / CEFR Level A2-B1: (IELTS 2.5 to 3.5)

This level is for students who are more confident to use and explore the language. This course develops speaking and writing whilst increasing vocabulary and fluency.

Students at this level might be interested in taking the Key English Test (KET).

Intermediate / CEFR Level B1: (IELTS 4.5 to 5.0)

This level is for students who want to consolidate their English language skills, increase vocabulary and pronunciation. Students at this level can communicate easily and should be able to identify and correct their mistakes.

Students at this level might be interested in taking the Preliminary English Test (PET).

Upper Intermediate / CEFR Level B2: (IELTS 5.5 to 6.0)

This level is for students who want to increase their comprehension and fluency and use English language in different formats such as websites and social networks, films and literature or watching English-speaking TV programmes. Students will widen their vocabulary and make sure that they use more grammar rather than simply understand it.

Students at this level might be interested in taking the First Certificate in English (FCE).

Advanced / CEFR Level B2-C1: (IELTS 6.5 to 8.0)

This level is for students who can communicate with ease on a range of topics. Students are introduced to more complex forms of English language and supported to integrate these into their everyday use of English.

Students at this level might be interested in taking the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE).

Proficiency / CEFR Level C2: (IELTS 8.0 to 9.0)

This level is for students who are able to use English language with confidence and accuracy. This course develops use of more complex grammar, broadens vocabulary and refines pronunciation. Use of English should be more natural, with little to distinguish a Proficiency student from a native speaker.

Students at this level might be interested in taking the Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
